This site is published by Locanda Orvieto™ (VAT 01613100559), a hospitality and restaurant business based in Orvieto. We work a few hundred metres from the cathedral, and for years we have been asked the same questions by visitors: how long does it take, what is really worth seeing, how do I get there, when is the best time to come.
This guide grew out of those questions — not out of an archive, but out of what people ask when they arrive in the square with half a day to spend and want to understand what they are looking at.
How we work
Our editorial policy
We do not publish opening hours or prices. That is a deliberate choice. Hours, prices and the make-up of each route are set by the Opera del Duomo and change through the year, with the seasons and with religious celebrations. A figure copied onto a web page today is a wrong figure three months from now, and a visitor who finds the cathedral closed has not been helped: they have been misled.
For that information we always point to the official channels of the Opera del Duomo, with a direct link to the relevant page. It is the only source that can be updated the moment something changes.
What you will find here instead is what does not change: the history of the cathedral, who built it and why, what Signorelli’s frescoes and the facade reliefs depict, how a visit unfolds, how long it takes, how to get there.
Sources
Historical and artistic information draws on the documentation of the Opera del Duomo di Orvieto and on the published literature about the monument. Where a statement comes from a specific source, we cite it at the foot of the page with a direct link.
Transparency
Our relationship with the Cathedral
None. We are not the Opera del Duomo, we are not its partner, we do not sell tickets and we receive no commission on visits. We do not handle bookings and we have no say over opening hours or access.
